What Is Prague 1 and Why Does Everyone Stay There?

Prague 1 is the central district of Prague encompassing the city's most famous neighbourhoods:

  • Old Town (Staré Město) — Astronomical Clock, Old Town Square
  • New Town (Nové Město) — Wenceslas Square, National Theatre
  • Lesser Town (Malá Strana) — Prague Castle, Lennon Wall
  • Josefov — Jewish Quarter, Old Jewish Cemetery
  • Hradčany — Castle District, Strahov Monastery

It's where most tourists stay because it contains virtually all of Prague's iconic attractions. When you book a Prague airport to Prague 1 transfer, you're getting a direct ride to the heart of everything.

Tips for First-Time Visitors to Prague

If it's your first time in Prague, booking a private airport transfer is the smartest move you can make:

  1. Skip the confusion — no navigating Czech-language bus signs or metro maps with bags
  2. Avoid taxi scams — airport taxi overcharging is well-documented
  3. Get local tips — your English-speaking driver can recommend restaurants, sights, and shortcuts
  4. Start relaxed — you're on holiday, not solving a logistics puzzle

Think of it as your first great Prague experience. See all our services.

After you land at Prague Airport

Prague has two passenger terminals next to each other. Terminal 1 handles flights from outside the Schengen area — the UK, Ireland, the US, the Middle East and Asia, for example — so you'll go through passport control before baggage claim. Terminal 2 handles flights from Schengen countries, with no passport check on arrival. Either way, allow around 15–40 minutes from landing to the arrivals hall, depending on queues and how quickly bags arrive.

Your driver already knows your flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name: in Terminal 1 by the Mattoni bar on your left as you come out, and in Terminal 2 by the information centre just outside the arrivals hall. See the meeting point guide for directions. If your bags are delayed or lost, report it at the airline's baggage desk before you leave the baggage hall, then message us on WhatsApp — your driver will wait.

A tip on money: the Czech Republic uses the Czech koruna (CZK), and cards are accepted almost everywhere. If you want cash, use a bank ATM rather than an exchange booth, and if a card machine or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose CZK — the conversion offered is usually worse. Your transfer is already paid when you book, so there's nothing to pay the driver.

Late-night arrivals in Prague 1

Many flights land in Prague late in the evening. After midnight, public transport runs only night trams and buses, and the Airport Express has stopped, so a pre-booked car is the easiest way into the centre. Pickups between 00:00 and 08:00 are charged at the night rate (+50%) and need at least 8 hours' notice — the exact price is shown before you pay.

Prague 1 is lively until late, but some side streets are quiet at night. Your driver stops as close to your door as possible and helps with the bags. If you're staying in an apartment, arrange self check-in with your host in advance and keep the door code handy — it's much easier than searching for it on your phone at 1 a.m.

The neighbourhoods of Prague 1

Prague 1 is the historic core of the city and the district most visitors stay in. It covers:

  • Staré Město (Old Town) — Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock and the eastern end of Charles Bridge.
  • Josefov — the former Jewish Quarter, with its synagogues and Pařížská street.
  • Nové Město (New Town) — the northern part of New Town is in Prague 1, including Wenceslas Square, Na Příkopě and Národní třída.
  • Malá Strana (Lesser Town) — baroque streets, St Nicholas Church and Kampa Island below the castle.
  • Hradčany — Prague Castle, St Vitus Cathedral and Strahov Monastery.

Every address in Prague 1 is 20–35 minutes from the airport, and you'll see the upfront price for your exact address when you book.

Driving in Prague 1: what to expect

Prague 1 has narrow one-way streets, tram lines, pedestrian zones and limited parking, which makes it a tricky place to drive if you don't know it. Our drivers do this every day, so they know which streets are open to cars, where to stop, and how to get as close as possible to your door.

Where a hotel or apartment is on a pedestrian lane (common in Old Town and around Charles Bridge), your driver stops at the nearest legal point and helps carry your bags. Tell us about anything unusual — a courtyard entrance, a gate code, a building with no lift — in the booking note.

Moving between Prague 1 neighbourhoods

Prague 1 is very walkable. Approximate walking times:

  • Old Town Square → Charles Bridge: about 10 minutes
  • Old Town Square → Wenceslas Square: about 10 minutes
  • Charles Bridge → Malá Strana Square: about 5 minutes
  • Malá Strana → Prague Castle: about 15–20 minutes uphill

Tram 22 is the easy way up to the castle if you'd rather not climb, and metro line A connects Malostranská, Staroměstská and Můstek.

Choosing your Prague 1 base

If you want to be in the middle of everything, stay in Old Town. For a quieter, more romantic feel, choose Malá Strana. For the best transport links and a wide choice of hotels, look at Wenceslas Square and New Town. And if you want views and calm evenings, the castle district is hard to beat.

Going back: Prague 1 to Prague Airport

The return journey from Prague 1 to Václav Havel Airport usually takes about 25–40 minutes, but allow extra time on weekday mornings (roughly 7:00–9:30) and late afternoons (roughly 15:30–18:30), when the main roads out of the city are at their busiest. Airlines generally recommend arriving 2 hours before a flight within the Schengen area and about 3 hours before a long-haul or non-Schengen flight, so for most travellers a pickup 2½–3½ hours before departure is about right.

Book the return when you book your arrival, or any time later. We need at least 90 minutes' notice for daytime pickups and 8 hours' notice for pickups between 00:00 and 08:00 — so if you have an early-morning flight, book it the day before. Pickups between 00:00 and 08:00 are charged at the night rate (+50%), and the price shown when you book already includes it.

Your driver collects you at your building's door, loads the luggage and drops you at the departures level of the right terminal: Terminal 1 for flights outside the Schengen area (for example the UK, US, Middle East and Asia) and Terminal 2 for Schengen flights. If you're unsure, check your booking or boarding pass — your driver can confirm too.

Luggage, families and groups heading to Prague 1

Every fare includes luggage. A Comfort car (VW Passat / Skoda Superb) or SUV (Skoda Kodiaq) takes up to 4 passengers with 4 bags included — typically 2 large suitcases and 2 cabin bags. Up to 2 extra large bags can be added for 300 CZK each. If you're 4 people with more than 6 bags, one car isn't enough, and the booking form will suggest a minivan or a second car.

For 5–7 passengers, book the minivan (VW Transporter) or the Mercedes Vito / V-Class: both take up to 7 people and 7 bags, priced per vehicle rather than per person. Bringing a folded pram, skis or golf bags? Mention it in the booking note so we keep space for them.

Every passenger needs a seat, including children, so count everyone when you choose the number of passengers.
