What to expect on your transfer to Hradčany

Your English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Václav Havel Airport with a name sign, helps with your luggage and drives you straight to your address in Hradčany. The trip takes about 20–30 min depending on traffic.

Your price is shown upfront and locked when you book. Night pickups (00:00–08:00) and extra luggage are charged as shown on our prices page.

Getting to Hradčany from the airport

From the airport your driver takes Evropská, the main road into the city, through Dejvice and up to the castle district, so you skip the traffic in the historic centre altogether.

Where the car can stop in Hradčany

Prague Castle itself is closed to cars, and the lanes around it are narrow, cobbled and partly restricted. Your driver stops as close to your hotel as the rules allow (usually right at the door, otherwise on the nearest street) and carries your bags over the cobbles.

Good to know about Hradčany

  • Hradčany is on a hill: walking up from the river with suitcases is steep, which is why a door-to-door car is worth it here.
  • Charles Bridge is about a 20-minute walk downhill through Malá Strana.
  • Expect a short security check at the castle entrances when you visit.

About Hradčany

Hradčany is the castle district above the Vltava, home to Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, Golden Lane and Strahov Monastery. Many streets are narrow, one-way or pedestrian, which makes public transport with suitcases difficult.

Nearby: Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, Strahov Monastery, Loreta, Golden Lane.

After you land at Prague Airport

Prague has two passenger terminals next to each other. Terminal 1 handles flights from outside the Schengen area — the UK, Ireland, the US, the Middle East and Asia, for example — so you'll go through passport control before baggage claim. Terminal 2 handles flights from Schengen countries, with no passport check on arrival. Either way, allow around 15–40 minutes from landing to the arrivals hall, depending on queues and how quickly bags arrive.

Your driver already knows your flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name: in Terminal 1 by the Mattoni bar on your left as you come out, and in Terminal 2 by the information centre just outside the arrivals hall. See the meeting point guide for directions. If your bags are delayed or lost, report it at the airline's baggage desk before you leave the baggage hall, then message us on WhatsApp — your driver will wait.

A tip on money: the Czech Republic uses the Czech koruna (CZK), and cards are accepted almost everywhere. If you want cash, use a bank ATM rather than an exchange booth, and if a card machine or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose CZK — the conversion offered is usually worse. Your transfer is already paid when you book, so there's nothing to pay the driver.

Combining the castle with your departure day

If your flight leaves in the afternoon or evening, you can still fit in a morning at the castle. Most hotels will store your luggage after check-out, so you can visit the castle, have lunch in Hradčany or Malá Strana, then collect your bags and meet your driver at the hotel.

Because Hradčany is on the airport side of the city, the drive from the castle district to the terminals is one of the quickest from central Prague — often around 20 minutes outside rush hour. Book your pickup with enough margin for the airline's recommended check-in time, and let us know in the booking note if you'll be waiting somewhere other than your hotel.

The drive up to the castle district

Hradčany is one of the closest central districts to the airport. Your driver takes Evropská into Dejvice and approaches the castle from the north-west, via the area around Pohořelec and Strahov — so you avoid the busy streets of Old Town altogether. Outside rush hour, the drive takes around 20 minutes.

The last stretch is through quiet residential streets and past Strahov Monastery, with glimpses of the city below. It's one of the most scenic arrivals in Prague.

Staying near Prague Castle

Hotels in Hradčany are mostly in historic buildings around Hradčanské náměstí, Pohořelec, the lanes of Nový Svět and the top of Nerudova street. The area is calm and spectacular in the evening, once the day visitors have left.

The trade-off is the hill: shops, restaurants and the rest of the centre are a walk downhill, and a climb back up. Tram 22 stops at Pohořelec and near the castle, which helps.

Visiting Prague Castle

Prague Castle is one of the largest castle complexes in the world. The grounds and courtyards are free to walk through; tickets are needed for the main interiors, such as St Vitus Cathedral's main nave, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane. There are security checks at the entrances, so allow a few minutes.

The changing of the guard takes place at the main gate on Hradčanské náměstí, with the largest ceremony at noon. Nearby, don't miss the Loreta pilgrimage site and the historic library halls of Strahov Monastery.

Walking from the castle into the city

The classic route down is Nerudova street to Malá Strana Square, then across Charles Bridge into Old Town — about 20–30 minutes at an easy pace, mostly downhill. Alternatively, the Old Castle Steps lead down to Malostranská metro station.

If you're staying elsewhere in the city and visiting the castle for a day, we can also drive you there from your hotel — just book a transfer with both addresses.

Going back: Hradčany to Prague Airport

The return journey from Hradčany to Václav Havel Airport usually takes about 20–35 minutes, but allow extra time on weekday mornings (roughly 7:00–9:30) and late afternoons (roughly 15:30–18:30), when the main roads out of the city are at their busiest. Airlines generally recommend arriving 2 hours before a flight within the Schengen area and about 3 hours before a long-haul or non-Schengen flight, so for most travellers a pickup 2½–3½ hours before departure is about right.

Book the return when you book your arrival, or any time later. We need at least 90 minutes' notice for daytime pickups and 8 hours' notice for pickups between 00:00 and 08:00 — so if you have an early-morning flight, book it the day before. Pickups between 00:00 and 08:00 are charged at the night rate (+50%), and the price shown when you book already includes it.

Your driver collects you at your building's door, loads the luggage and drops you at the departures level of the right terminal: Terminal 1 for flights outside the Schengen area (for example the UK, US, Middle East and Asia) and Terminal 2 for Schengen flights. If you're unsure, check your booking or boarding pass — your driver can confirm too.

Luggage, families and groups heading to Hradčany

Every fare includes luggage. A Comfort car (VW Passat / Skoda Superb) or SUV (Skoda Kodiaq) takes up to 4 passengers with 4 bags included — typically 2 large suitcases and 2 cabin bags. Up to 2 extra large bags can be added for 300 CZK each. If you're 4 people with more than 6 bags, one car isn't enough, and the booking form will suggest a minivan or a second car.

For 5–7 passengers, book the minivan (VW Transporter) or the Mercedes Vito / V-Class: both take up to 7 people and 7 bags, priced per vehicle rather than per person. Bringing a folded pram, skis or golf bags? Mention it in the booking note so we keep space for them.

Every passenger needs a seat, including children, so count everyone when you choose the number of passengers.
