Getting to Smíchov from the airport

Smíchov is one of the quicker city drives from the airport: your driver usually takes Evropská and the Strahov tunnel, coming out on the Smíchov side without crossing the historic centre.

Where the car can stop in Smíchov

The big hotels around Anděl and along the river have easy car access, many with their own drop-off point, so you're dropped right at the entrance.

Good to know about Smíchov

  • Anděl is a major transport hub: metro line B and many tram lines stop here.
  • Smíchov railway station has regional trains, including towards Karlštejn. Or we can drive you on a private day trip.
  • Staropramen Brewery is in Smíchov, and the riverside is a short walk from Anděl.

About Smíchov

Smíchov is a lively Prague 5 district around Anděl, with large hotels, the Nový Smíchov shopping centre, Smíchov railway station and riverside walks towards Vyšehrad.

Nearby: Anděl, Smíchov train station, Nový Smíchov, Staropramen Brewery, Dancing House (across the river).

After you land at Prague Airport

Prague has two passenger terminals next to each other. Terminal 1 handles flights from outside the Schengen area — the UK, Ireland, the US, the Middle East and Asia, for example — so you'll go through passport control before baggage claim. Terminal 2 handles flights from Schengen countries, with no passport check on arrival. Either way, allow around 15–40 minutes from landing to the arrivals hall, depending on queues and how quickly bags arrive.

Your driver already knows your flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name: in Terminal 1 by the Mattoni bar on your left as you come out, and in Terminal 2 by the information centre just outside the arrivals hall. See the meeting point guide for directions. If your bags are delayed or lost, report it at the airline's baggage desk before you leave the baggage hall, then message us on WhatsApp — your driver will wait.

A tip on money: the Czech Republic uses the Czech koruna (CZK), and cards are accepted almost everywhere. If you want cash, use a bank ATM rather than an exchange booth, and if a card machine or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose CZK — the conversion offered is usually worse. Your transfer is already paid when you book, so there's nothing to pay the driver.

The riverside and the weekend market

From Smíchov you can walk across the river to Náplavka, the embankment on the opposite bank, where boats, bars and a popular farmers' market at weekends bring the riverside to life. The walk takes about 10–15 minutes from Anděl via Jiráskův bridge, or along the river past Dětský ostrov.

Back on the Smíchov side, the streets between Anděl and the river have a growing number of cafés and restaurants, and the riverside itself is quieter than the Old Town embankments. If you're staying for a few days, Smíchov makes a good base: supermarkets and pharmacies are close at hand in Nový Smíchov, and most of the centre is one or two tram or metro stops away.

The drive to Smíchov

Smíchov sits on the left bank of the Vltava, south of Malá Strana. From the airport, the quickest way is usually through the western part of the city and the Strahov tunnel, which brings you out close to Smíchov without crossing the historic centre. Depending on traffic, the trip takes about 20–30 minutes.

Staying in Smíchov and around Anděl

Smíchov (Prague 5) is a former industrial district that has become a lively, practical place to stay. The centre of it is Anděl, with the Nový Smíchov shopping centre, cinemas, restaurants and several large modern hotels. It's home to the historic Staropramen brewery too.

Metro line B (Anděl and Smíchovské nádraží) and many tram lines connect Smíchov to the centre in a few minutes. It's often better value than staying in Prague 1, with Malá Strana and the river within walking distance.

Smíchov train station

Smíchovské nádraží, the district's railway station, is served by regional and some long-distance trains, especially towards the south-west of the country. If you're connecting to a train from here, we'll drop you at the station entrance — just enter it as your destination when you book. Check which station your ticket departs from, as many international trains use the main station (hlavní nádraží) instead.

Things to do nearby

  • Walk along the riverbank to Dětský ostrov island and on towards Malá Strana.
  • Cross the river to Vyšehrad, the old fortress with views up the river and a famous cemetery.
  • Take the tram up to Petřín Hill or the funicular from Újezd.
  • Spend an afternoon at Nový Smíchov for shopping and food.

Going back: Smíchov to Prague Airport

The return journey from Smíchov to Václav Havel Airport usually takes about 20–35 minutes, but allow extra time on weekday mornings (roughly 7:00–9:30) and late afternoons (roughly 15:30–18:30), when the main roads out of the city are at their busiest. Airlines generally recommend arriving 2 hours before a flight within the Schengen area and about 3 hours before a long-haul or non-Schengen flight, so for most travellers a pickup 2½–3½ hours before departure is about right.

Book the return when you book your arrival, or any time later. We need at least 90 minutes' notice for daytime pickups and 8 hours' notice for pickups between 00:00 and 08:00 — so if you have an early-morning flight, book it the day before. Pickups between 00:00 and 08:00 are charged at the night rate (+50%), and the price shown when you book already includes it.

Your driver collects you at your building's door, loads the luggage and drops you at the departures level of the right terminal: Terminal 1 for flights outside the Schengen area (for example the UK, US, Middle East and Asia) and Terminal 2 for Schengen flights. If you're unsure, check your booking or boarding pass — your driver can confirm too.

Luggage, families and groups heading to Smíchov

Every fare includes luggage. A Comfort car (VW Passat / Skoda Superb) or SUV (Skoda Kodiaq) takes up to 4 passengers with 4 bags included — typically 2 large suitcases and 2 cabin bags. Up to 2 extra large bags can be added for 300 CZK each. If you're 4 people with more than 6 bags, one car isn't enough, and the booking form will suggest a minivan or a second car.

For 5–7 passengers, book the minivan (VW Transporter) or the Mercedes Vito / V-Class: both take up to 7 people and 7 bags, priced per vehicle rather than per person. Bringing a folded pram, skis or golf bags? Mention it in the booking note so we keep space for them.

Every passenger needs a seat, including children, so count everyone when you choose the number of passengers.
